The Assyrian and Roman civilizations farmed fish in ponds. The Chinese have farmed fish in rice fields for thousands of years. Fish farming has expanded in recent years along with demand for fresh seafood. 

Preserving fish is also an ancient practice. Smoking and salting fish like salmon has been a proud tradition for hundreds of years in Russia, Scandinavia, and Britain.
